Okay this isn't really a character file but I thought it might help with future characters. This information comes from a book I bought in Disney World last summer entitled- "The Pirate Dictionary" (so if anyone wants to find some pirate lingo info I have it right 'ere). I was reading through it and found this list of ship's officers (for a naval ship but there is probably a lot of simularities) and figured if anyone needed to know what officers did on the ship (in no particular order I don't think):
1.The Captain- As we all know the captain is the head guy and I don't think we need a lot of explaining here.
2. The Master (and Mates)- The book says that they are "to direct the course, command all the sailers [sailors], for steering, trimming, and sailing the ship". Basically to look after the ship so the captain doesn't have too all the time.
3. The Pilot- "When they make land doth take charge of the ship till he brings her to harbour". I think he is the man to take care of the ship while the crew is on shore leave or something like that.
4. The Chirurgion (Surgeon)- "Is to be exempted from all duty, but to attend the Sick, and cure the wounded". Jane, my character is a Surgeon, which is actually pretty funny because it seems that originally Surgeon's were barbers and carpenters since they were well versed with sharp objects ().
5. The Cap Merchant or Purser- Takes account of all that is recieved or delivered.
6. The Master Gunner- This is one you'll probably be able to figure out.
7.The Carpenter- Another easy one.
8. The Boatswain- Takes care of equiment on the ship (the tackling, sails, needles, twine, ect.)
9. The Trumpeter- I'm not sure how to discribe this one and the book isn't to clear but apparently it's a entertainer of some sort.
10. The Marshal- "To punish Offenders, and to see Justice is exectued according to Directions".
11. The Corporal- "To see the setting and reliecing the Watch, and see all the soliders ad [and?] sailers keep their arms clean, neat and yare, and teach them thier use". I'm not sure but I think he is just another head of the crew to make sure everyone knows what to do in the case of greenhorns. He also gives out food it appears according to the captain's orders.
12. The Quarter-Master- "Charge of the Howle[?], for stowing, Romagng, and Trimming the ship in the hold", other then that, what ever that is they also seem to head of fishing.
13. The Cooper- Something like a blacksmith working on buckets, metal tubes, ect.
14. The Coxwain- The guy who takes care of the "skiffe"(skiff), pretty much deciding who should go and when they should be going.
15. The Cook- You'd all better know what this is:).
16. The Swabber- The cleaner, or in other words...Jim.
17. The liar- This one is very unclear but it's something about someone who lies has this job underneath the swabber and only cleans chains.
18. The Sailers- "ancient men for hoisting the Sails, getting the tacks aboard, hailing the bowling and steering the ship". The under guys:).
19. The Younkers- I think from the discription these are Cabin Boys who generally were learning from taking part in diffrent tasks.
20. The Lieutenant- I think this is the real second mate, something like Mister Arrow.
